7 Landing Page Mistakes Killing Your Conversion Rate (And How to Fix Them)
Most landing pages don't convert because they fail at the basics. Here are the 7 mistakes I see in 90% of pages I audit — and the fixes that actually move the needle.
I audit roughly 20 landing pages a month. Same mistakes, every time. If you're sitting at 1-2% conversion rate and wondering why, here's what's probably wrong.
1. You're selling features, not transformation
Your headline says "Comprehensive 12-week coaching program with weekly 1-on-1 calls."
Nobody wakes up wanting a 12-week program. They wake up wanting to lose 20 pounds or hit their first $10K month.
Fix: Lead with the transformation. Save the features for further down the page.
2. Your call-to-action is forgettable
"Submit" — never works. "Learn More" — never works. "Get Started" — barely works.
Fix: Tell people exactly what happens when they click. "Claim my free strategy call" or "Get the 5-step checklist" beats "Get started" every time.
3. You have too many CTAs going to different places
I see this constantly. Above the fold has a "Book a call" button. Mid-page has "Download the guide." Bottom has "Join the newsletter."
You've just split your traffic three ways and confused everyone.
Fix: One landing page, one conversion goal. Every CTA points to the same action.
4. No social proof above the fold
The first 5 seconds decide if someone stays. If they can't see any signal that other people trust you, they bounce.
Fix: Put 3 client logos, a star rating, or "trusted by X+ coaches" above the fold. Visible without scrolling.
5. Your form has too many fields
Each extra field drops your conversion by ~5%. If you're asking for name, email, phone, company, role, AND budget — you've cut your conversion in half.
Fix: Start with the minimum. Name and email is usually enough. Get the rest on the next page or the call.
6. You're not addressing the #1 objection
If your offer is $5,000+, the objection isn't "Should I do this?" — it's "Will this actually work for someone like me?"
If your page doesn't directly answer that, you lose.
Fix: Add a section called something like "What if I'm just starting out?" or "Will this work for my niche?" — and answer it honestly.
7. Your page is slow
If it takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, you've lost 40% of visitors before they see anything.
Fix: Compress images, remove unused fonts, host on a fast platform. Test with PageSpeed Insights.
The pattern
Every one of these comes from the same root cause: the page was designed for you, not for your visitor.
Fix the perspective, and these problems mostly fix themselves.
